A medley

The downside of not being able to play more with my materials these days is that everything takes so much longer than usual. It also seems to become more elaborate.

Take a simple prompt "make your own background" for example and combine it with "anything goes". For example - but this is what I actually used. In hindsight it could have been such a simple and fast card, but this took me hours.

First: Take a gelli print, stamp onto it and then heat emboss it. Cut it up for a background. Because it is a tissue paper glue it onto a copy paper. Wait it to dry. Then adhere it with double sided tape onto the card.

Then: Stamp some leaves and berries, color them. Stamp a focal image in three layers (yes, it's one of those layering stamps - pesky, but with such lovely results). Then fussy cut everything and arrange them pleasingly.  Stamp a sentiment, arrange that into the greenery. Then glue everything down.

Woodblock flowers

It's that time of month again - yes, time to show those wood block stamps some love. Always slow to get ideas I took a look at some challenges to see what I could pair wood block stamps with. And I found polka dots and circles, and that let me select these solitary flower stamps.

The background was done with two stencils on a gelli plate. The flowers were stamped with purple and brown inks on some previous tries to paint flowers with watercolor (which did not work for me - but I could use it anyway, hooray for that!). The text says: Hugs.

It's spring!

After this long and dreary and seemingly everlasting winter it is nice to have sunshine and flowers and warmth.

My card features a wax transfer background that I inked in various hues of green. (With wax transfer you take a piece of wax paper, run it with your substrate through in an embossing folder, then iron the substrate through a paper so that the wax can sink in. Then, when the time comes, you ink it. The wax creates images that resist ink.)

On top I added a selection of die cuts from papers that I had pulled from a gelli plate.

Tea for two

When I sit down to my desk I never know what I am going to make. Today I was playing with three prompts in my mind: romance - pink - heart.

Tea can be a very romantic moment, perhaps early on when you are just getting to know each other. A passing moment, no-committal but getting more intimate when tea is being served, discussion becoming more animated. Fine porcelain cups and a nicely thrown pot underline the ambience.

These thoughts formed my starting point. To get to the finished card I selected suitable gelli printed papers and used those for background and the tea service, stamped some ethereal dog rose for the background and hand lettered the sentiment ("tea for two").

Hello - playing bingo

I needed a "hello" card for a friend. I find them to be the most difficult of all - what do you put on them? There is no one answer. Today I took my cue from a row of bingo in a papercraft challenge.

I used a lot of green hued scraps (mostly blotched gelli prints), arranged them into a starburst pattern and run it through a polka dot embossing folder. I love the effect dry embossing creates on patterned paper, it somehow draws the attention to itself and the background papers receive less attention.

I attached a few die cut balloons with twine and added a sentiment.

Here's to you!

A new year and #newbeginnings. To celebrate the event, I gathered festive pinks and reds and ventured into new territory myself.

The background has a wax imprint, made with some wax paper and an embossing folder. The imprint needed to be ironed so the wax can melt - this makes the pattern transfer into the paper. When I colored the background with distress oxides - Picked raspberry and Festive berries - wax resisted the color and a pattern was created. There's an old Youtube video on the technique, I will link it when I find it again.

That of course created a lovely texture on the paper - the wax imprint is never 1-on-1 with the embossing folder, as the wax paper will crease and those creases will imprint themselves onto the card base.

A huge bouguet of die cuts, mostly gelliprints, and a wax seal round up the design.

Wishing you happiness

I am very fond of British nature themed stamps; they are simply beautiful and create a serene look that looks almost like a vintage copperplate.

Today I grabbed two, the birds are by Crafty Individuals and the berries by PaperArtsy. A few challenges were calling my name and I hoped to combine them in one card.

I picked my favorite colors, or rather color combination for this time of year which is baby blue with dark, brownish red. I made a gelli print and embossed it with leaves. I stamped the birds in brown Versamark ink, cut the panels out and inked the edges. I used the same ink for the rose hip stamp, embossed it with clear embossing powder and fussy cut it, then colored it in with pencils and markers.

These colors have a beautiful vintage vibe, too. - I am now unsure whether I should have added a flower as it was not in the images. But then I think: the rose hip was a beautiful flower and became a fruit afterwards. So perhaps it counts?

Blue Christmas wishes

Just in time - a rather tongue-in-cheek card - but one the recipient will appreciate.

I treated myself to a couple of new stamp sets this holiday. The layered goldfish set is by Hero Arts, as is also the skinny alphabet.

The first layer of the goldfish was stamped in teal, the top layer was embossed with gold. I used the dotted embossing folder again to create a wintry background. I built a little winter scene for my card with the white tree and snowflakes (the blue one is cut from a gelli print).

Pink and silver

I was in need of a gift box. Earrings a small, so I figured the gift box should be much larger than the gift itself. I took my color cues from Color Hues current challnge - pink and silver just felt very apt for this gift.

I started with a pink gelli print. It was made with acrylics and TH fir tree stencil, it seemed very apt for a Christmas gift.

I also used a mirrored silver card stock for the flower detail on the front and added a silver sparkle and a white die cut leaf to soften it up.

I also adhered a piece of pink tissue paper to a rectangular piece of silver card stock which sits on the bottom of the box. The tissue is wrapped around the bottom part and so it stays always in place. The tissue is longer than the package itself, so it wraps over the gift.

Lastly I attached a length of silver twine as a closure.

Circles

I have made many cards in rapid succession and didn't clean my table in between. There are two kinds of snippets, those awkward shapes and off-cuts one doesn't really know how to use, and those that were cut for a project and then abandoned, because they didn't quite fit there.

Today I used up a lot of "trash" from my table: a stamped sun which did not find its way to yesterday's card, silver "confetti" which was left over from two projects featuring silver snowflakes; three round shapes; antlers (now being used as the snowmans (womans?) stick arms.

The result is a tongue-in-cheek holiday card for a dear in-law.

A Christmas song

Jean Sibelius was a Finnish composer in the late 19th and early the 20th c. His symphonies are still played, but his Christmas song "Jo joutuu ilta" (translated into: Over hill and dale) remains less known. I managed to find a rather recent recording (here) of this beautiful but rather mournful song. This is as traditional Finnish style Christmas as it can get, a song about the darkness, snow and quietness, sung in a minor key.

That song was my starting point for this card, which I combined with some other ideas. The background is a gelli print with TH fir trees stencil. I also cut some fir trees from the same dark blue paper than my edging, and added golden stars. The name of the song is printed on a gold paper and used as text.

Inspired by...

... lovely challenges: one for the design elements, one for layout and the others for supporting ideas. How cool is that!

The sketch allowed me to place a central background - this is a gelliprint that was put through an embossing folder. It has a leafy pattern, so it goes well with my winter theme and provides awsome texture. For the diagonal element I chose a snowflake stamp. It was stamped in grey and embossed in glitter and it mimics the colors in the gelli print background.

The focal point is a bird, stamped and colored in with alcohol markers. A small length of a silver ribbon was plucked apart and adhered behind the bird.

Wish for peace

I was happy to find a putto (sometimes called cherub or amorino) stamp (by Couture Creations), as it will have many uses (I am thinking ahead to Valentines already).

This first time it fits in with the more traditional, religious element of Christmas, but it is bearing a modern message: make a wish. Wish for Peace, for example - sorely lacking in our times.

The background was made with a gelliplate and a snowflake stencil in two layers with several different paint colors. The rather Christmassy die-cut serves as a kind of finial to the scene and was hand colored. As was the putto. The putto is raised and the stamped sentiment slipped under his hand.

Colorful circles

Do you prefer circles/dots or stripes in your card making projects? My big love are circles and dots, hands down. They create a lively atmosphere and can add an element of fun.

That element of fun was on my agenda today. I created it using dots and small circles, either punched or die-cut, on a background that also features circles. All papers have been gelliprinted. The fun factor is also created by the use of many colors.

Thank you

There is always a reason to be thankful. I am thankful for my friends, and on a trivial note, for card challenges that make me think harder and catapult me out of my comfort zone.

It all started with a sketch today, and the need to use old and forgotten rubber stamps, give them some love they needed. I decided to work with my gelli printed and mixed media papers (neglected too often!). And gold embossing just seemed so suitable...

The result was this card. The sketch is awesome, it is a great basis for all types of cards.

Pearlescent stenciling

Today's card takes inspiration from a few challenges: the bees, the layout, stenciling and colors combine nicely as prompts. It's summer after all.

I started with a stencil and a couple of colors. I used a shiny tissue paper (from a recent shoe purchase) on a Gelli plate and did a couple of layers with matte and shiny paints. Here you can see the shiny portion (Amsterdam Pearl White).

The suggested colors were so delicate that I didn't want to introduce a high contrast by using black ink. Everything is stamped with VersaFine Clair Morning Mist. The sentiment has been embossed with clear embossing powder for added shine.

I followed the suggested layout and added bees around the flower. The flower was first colored in very lightly with watercolor pencils, then overlaid generously with Glossy Accents. The same with the wings of the bees. The dots are punched from a glitter cardstock that matched the colors.

The text reads "Enjoy your life, be happy".

Stencil fun

I really like all the effects one can get from stencils, be it spray paints, for gelli prints, coloring through them or using as embossing plates. Sadly, I tend to under utilize the possibilities as they need some serious cleaning afterwards, and I tend to make more backgrounds than I need.

Today was no different. I pulled a dozen or so gelli prints. I settled on this one made with a rough stencil I cut myself. The image is stamped and watercolored, it's a birthday card for my sister-in-law.

Eternal sunshine

Sunshine is what I wish for my summer vacation. Instead, I have been looking at rain clouds. It is a rainy summer up North where I live.Nevertheless, or for that reason, I was inspired by a couple of challenges that called for Vacation themes.

My starting point were the lovely colors of Inspirational challenge. I also got the idea for my starburst layout here - from the beach ball.

I have a lot of gelli prints, so I started by pulling out the vacation-appropriate colors: pink, turq, yellow, orange. Then I stamped "Happy Birthday" onto a cloud, which I placed in the center and flanked by two smaller clouds.
